Royce Simmons' of St. Helens wishes for Michael Maguire’s career trajectory – Rugby League
On Monday, October 3rd, St. Helen coach, Royce Simmons, shared with reporters that he aspires to follow in the footsteps of Michael Maguire by steering his team into the Grand Final in his debut season of the Engage Super League Series. He made
these comments after his outfit defeated Wigan Warriors by 26-18 on Saturday, October 1.
Saints will combat Rhinos in the title-decider at the Old Trafford, on Saturday, October 8th.
While speaking about his team’s brilliant on-field performance at the qualifying semi-final, Simmons stated that he is very pleased with his outfit, who managed to put an end to the Warriors’ stint in the Super League.
He further added, “I may appear calm but I'm over the moon. I'm as happy as Larry.”
While comparing his outfit’s performance with that of Leeds against the league ladder toppers, Warrington Wolves, Simmons was not surprised to see them out do the obvious winners and said, “Like us, they had to play some really good football because they
were also up against a champion side.”
With the final only a few days away, Simmons must decide the players he will be choosing for the squad. He has to decide if he will take up Leon Pryce after the player recently sustained a leg injury that ousted him from Leeds’ squad which battled the Warriors
for the Grand final berth. Pryce has now recovered just in time to get selected for the final showdown of Super League. If the player makes it in the finalised squad, he will be appearing for his tenth Grand final cap, which is a record for the league.
Further player news included James Graham of St Helens and Danny Buderus of Leeds, who will make their farewell appearances at Old Trafford. Graham is leaving the Super League to test his skills at the National level with the Canterbury Bulldogs. Meanwhile,
Buderus’ return to his former National Rugby League (NRL) club, Newcastle Knights, was confirmed after Leeds magnificent win against Warriors in Friday’s clash.
Buderus is up for his side’s win in the Grand final showdown, as this will make his exit perfect from this level. The player’s final year of rugby career will be with his hometown club, Knights, which was only possible as Rhinos agreed to make compensation
for the player by letting him exit a year earlier than the promised number of years on his contract.
