Royden Bryson and Thiago Camarao advance to Round 4 of 2011 Nike US Open of Surfing
The 10th and 11th heat of 2011 Nike US Open of Surfing’s round of 24 (Round 3) kept the series of intense battles going at the Huntington Beach Pier, California, on Friday, August 5.
After the 10th heat concluded, it was South Africa’s in-form Royden Bryson who walked away with top honours by taking down Brazil’s Jadson Andre in an intense head-to-head battle. The outcome of the heat sent Bryson over to the round of 12 (Round
4), while marking the end of the road for his rival.
Brazil’s Thiago Camarao took on the French sensation, Jeremy Flores, in the 11thheat and managed to prevail in the intense battle, though just barely. The victory allowed Camarao to move one step closer to the title-shot, while removing his rival
from the competition.
The latest Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Prime event had been running under pretty demanding conditions over the last three days, with hardly one-to-three foot waves breaking at the event site, accompanied by cold weather. However, things had
gotten much better on Friday, with Huntington Beach Pier getting graced by two-to-four foot waves, much to the joy of both, the surfers as well as the fans.
The 10th heat pitted the 28-year-old Bryson against the ASP World Title campaigner, Andre. Both the surfers had been exhibiting excellent form over the last few days and it was difficult to pick a favourite.
As the heat got underway, both the surfers seemed to be out of luck as they struggled to find good waves. After a patient hunt, Bryson managed to land a couple of good waves and climbed to a heat-total of 11.10 points. The 21-year-year Brazilian desperately
hunted for a decent wave in order to respond to his rival, but eventually had to embrace defeat after finishing with a heat-total of 9.84 points.
The 23-year-old Camarao had a tough task at hand as he faced the in-form Flores in the 11th heat. The French had been making quite an impact in his previous heats and was not expected to go down without putting up a tough fight.
As expected, the head-to-head battle turned out to be an intense one, with neither of the two surfers really letting the other take control of the heat. The decline in frequency of waves had further added to the challenge and intensity of the contest. However,
Camarao eventually managed to finish on top with a heat-total of 11.77 points against Flores’ 10.77, removing the French from contention to go through to the next round.
