Royden Bryson and Thiago Camarao clinch top honours in Round 2 of 2011 Nike US Open of Surfing
The surfing action continued at the Huntington Beach Pier in California, America, with the 10th and 11th heat of 2011 Nike US Open of Surfing’s round of 48 (Round 2) on Thursday, August 4.
South Africa’s Royden Bryson clinched a convincing victory over his rivals in the 10th heat to secure a place in round of 24 (Round 3). He was accompanied by Australia’s Yadin Nicol, who earned the spot after finishing in second place. America’s
Bobby Martinez and Brazil’s Junior Faria faltered during the heat and ended up in third and fourth positions respectively, getting ejected from the event as a result.
The 11th heat saw Brazil’s Thiago Camarao take an exciting last-minute win, leaving Brazil’s Miguel Pupo to settle for runner-up position. Brazil’s Adriano de Souza and France’s Maxime Huscenot were eliminated from the competition after rounding
out the third and fourth positions respectively.
As the 10th heat kicked off, the 28-year-old Bryson wasted no time in showing off his skills in what turned out to be much more favourable conditions than the previous two days of the competition. He continued to maintain an upper-hand over his
rivals as the battle progressed and eventually finished with a heat-total of 14.50 points to claim victory.
Nicol started off slow in the heat, but a late charge allowed him to clinch two decent waves, taking him to a heat-total of 12.57 points. Even though the score was not enough to earn him the top slot, it proved sufficient to put him in second place and put
him into the next round.
Martinez and Faria made a shocking exit from the event after failing to collect a fighting heat-total. While the American finished third with a two-wave total of 11.74 points, the Brazilian sensation finished last, earning a total of 7.54 points from his
two best waves.
Brazil’s 23-year-old Camarao had a tough task at hand as he faced the likes of De Souza, Pupo and Huscenot in the 11th heat.  Both Pupo and De Souza took control of the heat early only, leaving Camarao in third place with a first-wave score of
7.23 points. However, he managed to lock a wave in the closing minutes of the heat to pull off two air-reverses, earning 8.93 points for the outstanding effort and jumping from third to first place to take the win.
Commenting on the decisive wave after the heat, Camarao said, “Adriano was just beside me and we were hassling a little bit, but he let me go on that wave. I knew I should do my best. I needed a huge score and there was a good air section at the end. I knew
I had to go for the air.”
After leading for most part of the heat, Pupo eventually finished in second place with a heat-total of 15.40 points. The outcome may not have been what he had hoped for, but at least he was still alive in the event.
De Souza was well on his way to the third round after earning a heat-total of 14.00 points, but was pushed to third place by Camarao in the dying minutes. He, along with Huscenot who finished fourth with a two-wave total of 9.80 points, was removed from
contention for the event title.
