Royston Drenthe rules out move to Benfica – Portuguese Primeira Liga Update
Real Madrid’s http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Royston-Drenthe-c31824 has been long linked with Benfica but in a turn of events the player has ruled out a move to the Portuguese club.
"I am not going to Benfica. I do not want to go there,” said the defender.
The Dutch man has long been touted as the replacement for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fabio-c13152 Coentrao, who has become the latest €30 million addition to the star studded lineup at the Bernabeu. Drenthe’s agent had earlier claimed that his client is more than willing to join the Eagles
in order to have a run in a string of games, but the former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Feyenoord-c39258 man has completely turned the cards and is made up his mind of not trying his luck in the Portuguese Primeira Liga.
The player’s decision would come as a surprise to many as he is far from being a favourite in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Spain-c3011. Drenthe is the least of Madrid-based club’s worries; they showed their intent of selling the player after loaning him to Hercules last season.
The 24-year-old has shown that he is not content with playing a minor role with Los Blancos and reiterated his anger especially after being omitted from the preseason training in the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/United-States-c3034.
"Mourinho did not talk to me and the club only sent me a paper saying I was not going to Los Angeles," he was quoted as saying.
His decision of not moving to Estadio da Luz will be a big blow to Benfica who were quite eager to do business with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ezequiel-Garay-c13071 through Coentrao’s transfer deal. They have also acquired a decent amount of cash and now
have the financial capability to reel in their targets, of whom Drenthe was the priority.
The Reds had earlier identified the likes of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Alex-Sandro-c4798 to join the squad but Ansaldi’s club, Rubin Kazan, were not willing to negotiate a deal for their star asset. While Santos’s Sandro is largely untested at the highest stage and
is fairly inexperienced, making him a risky investment.
Drenthe was seen as an ideal target in terms of value for money and experience, while boasting it all at a relatively young age of 24. The http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Netherlands-c753 International has still not reached his potential and could possibly groom into an even better player in
his peak years. But the move has abruptly come to a halt despite the ongoing negotiations between the two concerned clubs, and Benfica’s willingness to part with €4 million for the defender’s services.
But since the Drenthe will now not be arriving at the helm, Benfica will now focus solely on searching for other players, who are capable enough of filling the gap left by Coentrao.
