if your after a social environment instead of a action game based game you might want to try 'Second Life', its more 'virtual reality' than game and sounds more like what you are after

There aren't many good MMORGPs that you don't have to download.

If you don't mind downloading, try Maplestory, Dungeon runners, Flyff or Silkroad - all of which are free.
