Rubén Amaro, Jr. rubbishes reports about mishandling Ryan Howard’s injury - MLB Update
Clarification has come from the Philadelphia Phillies’ higher management about the injury Ryan Howard had last year. Earlier reports emerged stating reasons why Howard’s injury had worsened to such an extent that he is taking too long for recovery.
A newspaper maintained that since cortisone were used by the time his left foot injury had struck Howard, broken tendon in his Achilles he endured at the moment is a direct consequence of that treatment.
With this, Phillies’ management was blamed for being reckless and unconcerned about potential problems one kind of treatment can cause for a player.
After the newspaper reports, the Phillies’ General Manager Rubén Amaro, Jr. stepped forward and denied everything with logical arguments.
Left foot and torn Achilles' tendon are two different things and treatment applied on one has nothing to do with other, he maintains.
Substantiating his point by saying that before problem with Achilles' tendon started, the left foot injury had recovered. Therefore thinking that latter had caused former is lame, he elaborated.
Going all out to prove an utmost attention the club paid while injury had unfolded, Amaro explained that the Phillies have been the most concerned about players’ treatment in the past.
''We're probably one of the most conservative clubs in baseball in administering treatment, and we always want to make sure we have the player's best interest,'' Amaro said.
By explaining how the injury occurred in first place and what kind of focus was accorded, he went on to justify exhaustion of options the Phillies as a club resorted to, in order to make sure Howard is fit prior to start of the season.
''I wanted to clear up some of the insinuations regarding a cortisone shot,'' Amaro said. ''The cortisone shot was treated for some (other) issue he had. It was not part of the Achilles' injury. We didn't feel it was an issue. That was resolved by the time
he had his injury. One thing had nothing to do with the other.''
Howard is one of those injured players with the Phillies whose absence is being felt in almost every game.
By coming out of injury at the earliest, Howard can play the kind of role that he has been performing in last couple of years for the Phillies.
