Rubbed Finish Furniture?

How do you get an antiqued rubbed finish on furniture? I am buying some bedroom furniture that is solid maple and stained dark green. Eww, but the furniture itself is beautiful. I would like to paint it a dark brown but have a rubbed finish. How would I do this?

  1. Milk paint!  Non-toxic, and it dries quickly.  Mix it, brush it on, sand it smooth, re-coat it, sand it, and then you can put on a wax finish, or pretty much any type of finish you want.  Just make sure to do a little experimenting first.  The Old Fashioned Milk Paint Company is where I get mine.  Hope this helps!

  2. I have the same question.  I checked out some books at the library, and there's a technique called "colorwashing" that looked promising.
