Question:

Rubbish Collections?

Does anyone in South Gloucestershire who has their rubbish collected fortnightly have a problem with it?

I can't help but laugh at everyone in borough's who have a weekly collection panicking at their rubbish collected every other week.

I moved to South Glos 2 years ago and think the rubbish collection is great. It's encouraged me to recycle more?

Can anyone in South Glos put the rest of the country's mind at rest on this issue?

  1. Do you have a big family though?

I have a relatively large family and we recycle all we can at the moment including home composting.  Fortnightly collections will lead to maggot infested bins.  We already have a problem here with foxes...all it will do is feed them more when the less health conscious among us decide not to purchase a suitable container to hold their rubbish bags in.

    Bad news IMO.

    EDIT

Bluebadger, our council has not issued wheelie bins...apparently it costs too much so we end up with black bags sitting on houses driveways, front lawns etc over night.

  3. We have had a fortnightly collection here in my area for about 18 months. Far better. There is not so much rubbish about the streets. As for PollyPoc I do not understand the worry of the suitable container - that is what the wheely bin is for!! Double wrap stuff you will worry about being smelly. As for the maggots, if you are composting then the leftovers and bones can go in there!! No flesh = no maggots!!

The problem we have here is that people do not want to keep the wheely bins in their garden or yard. It was OK to store black sacks, but not a green bin and a black bin!! No logic there then.

  4. I live in south Glos and to be honest it doesn't work.  we're a family of 4 and on the weeks the council doesn't collect the black bin we have to go and visit the local tip and get rid of the rubbish ourselves - yes we use the green bin for what it is used for but 2 weekly collection of the black bin is mental. come the summer it stinks and maggots appear in the bin.  you are obviously very lucky.  Sorry to p155 on your bonfire but it don't work. the rest of the country is right to be panicking.

  5. Not in the area you were asking about but I've had the same thing at my home in Kent.

At first, everyone complained, saying that they had too much rubbish for fortnightly collection etc etc...but once you start recycling you find out just how much you CAN recycle - and you can put as many of those bags out as you like. I now recycle 4 bags of rubbish a week and only one of waste, if that.

The only drawback is that our collection here doesn't accept glass for recycling yet, although I'm told that's coming.

  6. I agree with you it is actually working out better.

    BUT

I am worried if they are going to start weighing our bins and charging to empty it per weight of the bin. I am angry about that as we already pay council tax which is more than enough.
