correct me if i'm wrong, it seems to be rubbish everywhere in London, i came from a not so well developed country, but we dont have newspaper, soda cans or cardboard everywhere, because we can sell it to recycle centre in exchange for money. but my main purpose is, where can i find more infor about recycle or join any association to help a little, during my stay in this country?

so far the recycle bins that we have at home are:

1 for garden waste,

1 for newspaper, iron can and glass bottle.

1 for all sort of thing that considered non-recyclable at the moment (PET bottle, cardboard, plastic bag....etc)

  2. I was walking in London one day and I had a soda can.  I was looking everywhere for a garbage can.  I couldn't find one.  I walked and walked.  Finally I asked someone where are the garbage cans so I can through out this soda can.   Then the person said there are no garbage cans because they are afraid of terrorists.  At the time I guess London was afraid of the IRA.

So blame the IRA on your rubbish.

  4. Haven't you seen Marry Poppins?  London has been filthy a long time!

  5. Its come about because most local authorities have tried "bullying" people into recycling.  This is either in the form of supplying you with a smaller bin or reducing your landfill waste collections to fortnightly.

One of the reasons why its not working is that although people have got separate bins outside the house, most (particularly those living in bedsits) don't have the same inside the house.  So therefore people just take the lazy option and chuck it all in one bin  Another reason is mentioned in your question, there is no incentive here to do so.

A trick with this is that if your bins are overfilling and there's rubbish building up in the garden, to use all the empty space in the neighbours' bins as opposed to what you mentoned in your question and tipping it on the streets.

  6. I found this video on youtube on the rubbish 'menace' in London that won a friends of the earth award.

There are many online website and groups now to find information. I agree it is very complicated.
