Rubby De La Rosa to undergo Tommy John surgery; out for the season – MLB News

Los Angeles Dodgers have been in the headlines this season for not-so-good reasons and they face trouble yet again with starting pitcher Rubby De La Rosa out for at least the current season.
De La Rosa initially suffered from a sprained elbow ligament but MRI scans done on Monday, August 1 revealed that the right-handed ace pitcher has partially torn ulnar collateral ligament a Tommy John surgery is the only possible solution to it.
A Tommy John surgery would require a ligament transfer and this means that De La Rosa might possibly miss the next season as the recovery time after this surgery is at least around 12 to 18 months. Dodgers will be looking for his replacement, that can do
well to compliment Clayton Kershaw.
Expressing his thoughts about the surgery followed by the extended rehabilitation time De la Rosa said that he is nervous because he has never been operated upon. However, this type of surgery has become a routine now and has a high success rate which gave
the Dodgers’ starter some hope.
Relieved after learning that the surgery would alleviate the tormenting pain and that the probability of success is high, De La Rosa said, “It gives me more confidence to have the operation. I know if I work hard, I can come back.”
De La Rosa was hurried to the Major League Baseball in May this season and was quick to impress. He constantly clocked the 100 mph on the speed radar and silenced his critics with a win-loss record of 4-5 at an earned-run average of just 3.71. Injury got
the better of him as soon as he was starting to fire up.
Dodgers’ medical team has said that De La Rosa is expected to recover a bit faster than other players and is expected to make it to the bull-pen in about nine to 12 months. Team trainer Stan Conte said that they were lucky to quickly identify De La Rosa’s
injury and this would help him in a faster recovery.
De La Rosa last started for the Dodgers on July 31 and threw 103 pitches in four innings. However, he failed to make an impact, going for three runs and five hits during his spell at the mound at an ERA of 6.75.
His start to the Majors was impressive. He recorded a 3-0 win-loss record before losing four consecutive starts. He could have registered a strong statement in his debut season but an unlikely injury has halted his progress.
Dodgers are in their worst-ever season. They are fighting bankruptcy on one end and injuries on the other. It will be vital for them to make a notable strategy for the next season with this season almost out of reach.
