Ruben Amaro Jr. not discarding option of buying Shane Victorino from free agent market-MLB Update
Centre fielder, Shane Victorino was sent to the Los Angeles Dodgers during the season by Philadelphia Phillies through a trade. At the moment, Victorino is a free agent, seeking deals from interested organisations.
In light of the fact that the Phillies require centre fielders and do not have many reliable options in their own farm system, they can pursue Victorino again.
Victorino struggled with regard to offence in the season. Unable to live up to the requirements of the team, he disappointed the officials immensely.
He is one of those players that earned great amount of opportunities from the club for proving his mettle. Occasional glimpses of excellence apart, he remained a below par outfielder for the team.
The Phillies’ General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. realising that they face a dearth of centre fielders has stated that all the possible options will be reviewed in the offseason by him.
He has made it clear that Victorino remains as part of the players that they can sign contracts with, nullifying the impression that they have parted ways with him for good.
While Amaro tried to avoid being specific, he considered ruling out Victorino from the possibilities as inappropriate. He believes they do not have enough leeway when it comes to finding talented outfielders.
“Maybe,” Amaro said. “I don’t like to talk about guys specifically, but we’re going to keep all our options open. There’s no reason to close off any options. There’s not enough talent out there to close off options.”
Similarly, he holds the view that reliever Brett Myers can also become part of the team once again after he left the Phillies in 2009.
If Myers can help their bullpen in the next season, he will certainly be given importance during the process of evaluations of the players that will possibly be hired by the club.
“I don’t have any problem with Brett, as long as he could help us,” Amaro said. “But I don’t know if we have the right role for him. I think he might want to start or close. The fit matters to the player, too.”
Within a few days, it can be expected that the Phillies make announcements with regard to the acquisition of free agents.
