Ruben Amaro Jr. talks about Philadelphia Phillies being seller or buyer - MLB Update
In an interesting flow of comments coming from Ruben Amaro Jr. the Philadelphia Phillies' General Manager, discussion about the club being seller or buyer has taken a new turn. While admitting that the Phillies are passing through hard times, he believes
that it is too early to term the side as seller. He is optimistic that it will not be the case.
Following their poor performance in first month of the season, speculation that pitcher Cole Hamels and centre fielder Shane Victorino can be sold are rife. While these are just anticipations based on the situation at-hand, it is not sure when it will happen
actually.
General Manager hopes for the possibility that the Phillies will start winning games and will eliminate any such eventuality.
However, he confirms that if a situation arises, when having some players in the line-up appears good-for-nothing like scenario, all possible decisions can be taken.
“I don’t expect us to be in a seller’s mode. But I also have to be realistic. If the team decides it doesn’t want to play the way we expect to play or play the caliber of baseball necessary to win, you can’t squeeze blood from a stone,” Amaro Jr. said.
Phillies have started witnessing improvements in their performance. If they can show consistency and their offence can step up during critical moments of the game, long-winning streaks can easily be a reality.
Their pitchers are still among the most reliable and with little run-support can propel the side to amazing victories.
Therefore, it may take few more months before it can be decided which team can become seller and which can be a buyer.
The only way to avoid being a seller is by initiating a new beginning and showing dominance for about two to three months. As GM stresses, the Phillies will be looking to go out of their way to turn their image in the season around
“The one way we can be buyers is by keeping our heads above water — if we’re five games out, seven games out, within striking distance, then yeah,” Amaro Jr. uttered.
The fact the Phillies won against the San Diego Padres on Friday, it may spell a new club in the making, one that is totally different to what have been seen so far in the season.
