Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo slaughters Facundo Bagnis in second round – BVA Open 2011 CH
Argentine, Facundo Bagnis, was hammered by Spanish, Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo, in straight sets 6-3, 6-0 in the first round of BVA Open Challenger tournament, contested in Brazil, on Thursday October 27th. It just took an
hour and five minutes for the 33-year-old Spaniard to overpower the Argentine youngster.
21-year-old youngster couldn’t understand the game of his opponent at all and surrendered few minutes after the start. It was something he has never seen in his recent past and despite his excellent form on clay courts, this was
something alien to him.
The Argentine had lost three of his last nine encounters and his inferior ranking doubled his despair. Sizeable crowd gathered to witness a close encounter but the only experienced a one-sided trouncing.
Spanish started it off in dominating fashion and continued the hammering for over an hour. He thumped three back to back aces in the eighth game of the first set and broke his competitor’s serve in the next game to finish it off.
World No.162, Bagnis, was hovering all over the place and couldn’t find any sort of firm footing anytime during the match. World No.130, Hidalgo, smashed three aces and registered an impressive first serve success rate of 94% in
the first set. There was nothing worth mentioning about his competitor other than his single ace that brought some sarcastic applause from the crowd.
Trailing one set down and looking extremely rusty and tarnished, Argentine couldn’t provide any sort of entertainment for the crowd and was a complete flop; he was unable to win a single game and it was more embarrassing then disappointing
to say the least.
The Spaniard did help his opponent by double-faulting on four different occasions but Bagnis was so disillusioned and heart-broken that he couldn’t capitalize on any opportunity provided to him; he was not even reaching for slightly
difficult shots across the court; probably the in-experienced factor played its part in the game.
33-year-old veteran with a perfect 100% first serve and first return points success rate proved his worth and sent a strong message to his upcoming competitor’s as well. He capitalized on three of the five allotted breakpoint opportunities
and secured twenty-six out of thirty-five points played in the second set.
Hidalgo won a massive 63% total points and pounded his opponent with complete command. This must have been the most terrifying defeat for the 21-year-old that will lower his self confidence for sure.
Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo moves into the last eight with this triumph and squares-off against the sixth seeded home boy Ricardo Mello in his next match. It is expected to be a much close contest and crowd is expecting their local hero
to make it to the semis. It will be a tough task for Hidalgo but seeing his remarkable performance in this match, any outcome is possible.
