Rubens Barrichello denies brunt of the drivers against Lewis Hamilton – Formula 1 news
Grand Prix Drivers Association (GDPA) Chairman Rubens Barrichello has denied any rumours regarding Formula 1 drivers’ meeting about Lewis Hamilton and said that all such news is baseless.
The stewards have been keeping Lewis under scrutiny throughout this season. Hamilton has been facing the music more than any other driver due to his style of driving. He has received five drive-through penalties in the season so far including the one at
the recently held Singapore Grand Prix, due to a collision with Felipe Massa of Ferrari. It was only after this that the rumours gained strength that the Drivers Association will be discussing Hamilton’s case during the meeting.
Barrichello though in his statement said, “I don't think that's happening. I think someone has made that up. During the briefings we talk about everything, and then with the GPDA we get together and talk a bit further.”
“For example, a lot was said about what [Michael] Schumacher did to Lewis at Monza, that it was unfair, but then it got to the briefing and nobody actually said anything. There's too much talking and not enough action, so I don't think there will be anything
regarding Lewis,” he added further.
He defended Lewis’ penalties of the season by mentioning how he was often at the centre of television coverage because of the lower grid positions. Also, Formula 1 now has more overtaking than before and that has been the reason why Lewis has been penalised
more than other drivers, as he has been involved in a lot more overtaking than others, he said.
While that being said, Barrichello did say that this did not mean that all that Lewis did was okay, but it would be unfair to Lewis, if this is pinpointed at him.
This is not the first time Lewis will find himself in this quagmire. In 2008, Hamilton was targeted at a drivers’ meeting discussing his on-track standards, because he overtook Vitaly Petrov by weaving his way through, which did not go down well with the
drivers or the stewards of the race.
