Rubens Barrichello expresses his desire to race in Formula 1 again – Formula 1 news
Rubens Barrichello has confirmed the rumours that despite his step to take up IndyCar for the 2012 season, he still wants to race in Formula 1.
Barrichello at the end of the 2011 season was desperately looking for a race seat to prolong his almost two decade long career. His 2011 stint with Williams was not a particularly good one. It was a mixture of not-so-impressive driving and a less than average
car which lacked competitiveness.
The Brazilian was told by friends and other drivers of the sport to retire at the final race of the season which was held at Brazil. Barrichello though had no intentions to quit the sport and kept his hopes for a race seat alive.
He earlier in the month tweeted that he is waiting on some good news from Williams indicating that they might extend his contract. Williams were looking for a better pay driver and went with Bruno Senna who has reportedly brought in $40 million in sponsorships.
The move left Barrichello virtually without any alternatives of a race seat for the 2012 season and the Brazilian decided to take up IndyCar racing. Although the veteran said that his heart is still in Formula 1 and is still his priority.
“I have no contract with anybody so there's nothing stopping me doing it,” Barrichello told the O Estado de S.Paulo newspaper. “I'm doing it with my mind wide open. If I can get the passion with that car that I have always had when I am driving, then why
not? I love racing.”
“It's true and it's an important issue to be resolved. But before I think about it, first I have to know the car. There is always the possibility of running the season but not the ones on the ovals,” Barrichello talked about the dangers the ovals in the
US posed relative to strict Formula 1 safety policies.
The 39-year-old said that his dream to compete in his 20th season is still very much alive and he will look for further opportunities that will allow him to do that.
