Rubens Barrichello impressed with Williams’ performance but concerned over KERS – Formula 1 news
Williams’ driver Rubens Barrichello has said that the team is in better shape than 2010 and he will target top ten positions with the new car, FW33.
He also did show some concerns over the Kinetic Energy Recovery System and movable rear wing and said that these issues will be raised in front of the FIA.
Rubens Barrichello is now in his second season with the Williams team. In 2010, he was able to put the Williams’ team in the sixth spot with 69 points along with teammate Nico Hulkenberg.
He said that FW33 is in much better shape than their 2010 car. “I think we are better on performance than last year. The car is a different animal though so there is a different way of treating it, but I quite like it,” he explained.
He also said that the speed of the car is yet to be determined and it will be revealed when it hits the track in Melbourne.
Talking about the new Pirelli tyres and their quick degradation, Barrichello said that the tyres will play an important role in the upcoming season and the drivers will have to take care of the tyres, but still the race will not be completed on a single
compound.
Barrichello has shown quite a lot of concern over the KERS system and said that Williams might remove it as it creates more problems than it solves.
On Monday, Williams’ technical director, Sam Michael did confirm that KERS will be used in the car but Barrichello still thinks that it will make life difficult for the driver on the track. A lot of other drivers have also shown concern over the KERS and
movable rear wing that it will make the game more unnatural.
Barrichello said, “Running with both KERS and the rear wing is tough. As soon as you do a lot of running you get used to the situation, but every new track will be a new challenge.”
He explained that as there are more buttons on the steering wheel so the driver will have to take his eyes off the track for a moment to activate KERS or movable rear wing. He also said that with the limitations of using movable wing once per lap will make
Formula 1 more hectic for the driver.
As Ruben Barrichello is the chairman of Grand Prix Drivers Association, he has said that these issues will be raised in front of Jean Todt and Charlie Whiting.
Talking about the season opener in Australia, he said that he will target some point scoring finishes with the new Williams FW33 and said that with new innovations in the car this is achievable.
