Has anyone else ever seen a ruby throated humming bird that was dark yellow instead of the usual dark feathered color? We have one feeding at our feeder but we have so far failed to photograph it.

  1. I am no hummingbird expert (yet!) but I live in one of this country's top places for hummers to hang out.  People here in Southeastern Arizona like to hang several hummingbird feeders in their yards to attract thost busy little critters.

Ramsey Canyon is four miles from me, and that place is considered the "Hummingbird Capital of the World."  (It's owned by The for-profit Nature Conservancy, so of course they will market themselves there as such)

I want to say that the bird you saw was a Rufous Hummingbid, a rather common little guy around here.

  2. I have seen irridescent green colored Ruby Throated Hummingbirds, but not a yellow one.  I found this pic on Flicker. It shows a light brown one. Look at the pictures in the album on this link, you will see a light brown one with a red throat.

Maybe this is similar to the one you have at your feeders. :)

I'm not sure they are Ruby Throated.  :)
