Question:

Rude old golfer with attitude?

I went golfing recently and had a negative experience with an old man golfer. I was on a par 3 hitting my tee shot and it went way right. I saw the ball land by a tree and it hopped out of view. When I went to find my ball, I realized that it had rolled somewhat close to the tee off area for the next hole. Two old guys had just finished their tee shots and were walking towards me and one of them says "Would've appreciated a fore" in a rude way. I did not call "fore" because I didn't think the ball had a chance of hitting them - because I saw it hit the ground first by the tree.

Was he just an old rude golfer with attitude? Or, should I have yelled out "fore"?

  1. Old guy's can't move well and are often dealing with health conditions that do tend to make them grumpy.I have had the same thing happen to me and I just said "sorry I didn't see you" and kept walking. It was a good thing too later one of those old golfers repaid my apologetic kindness and saved me some money. He was a judge.

  2. I would not blame an old grumpy golfer for requesting a " fore " on a wayward ball.  Since I am one of those old " grumpy " guys with an attitude for those  who exhibit no etiquette for the game I say you should have hollered " fore ". It is your duty to warn others when they are put in danger by a situation which you created.

  3. If you didn't know that they were they then I would of done the same thing, if you did then yeah, you should of.

I hate playing with annoying old golfers, they think they are better than you even when they have 20 more then you.

  4. Hey. Don't worry about that, old men are a tad grumpy from time to time. If you saw the golf ball drop and then it rolled down the hill or even bounced a little then your fine.don't worry about it.have fun and hope you don't run into the grumpy old man again!!! lol

  5. The guy might have just been having a bad day so of course he had a bad attitude. If the ball didn't look like going anywhere near him then no you didn't have to call fore.

    Have a good one...

  6. You just got to imagine if you were them and a ball almost comes close to you unexpectedly (maybe at a fast speed) ... they probably had a point but make sure to say sorry to them next time and let them know you are beginner or don't play that often.

  7. If the ball is going towards anyone, even if it has no chance of hitting them, you ma as well shout fore. Gumpy old men can't have a go at you then and if they do they're in the wrong.

  8. Why do you gotta mention he was old? What if he was fat? Would you have said some fat guy was rude? When in doubt, holler fore ,Beavis.

  9. Quick answer, yes. Since it really costs nothing to "fore" a shot, I tend to err on the side of caution. "Fore" it even if it is vaguely in the direction of another golfer. That said, he was probably a rude golfer. I don't know why but it seems that if I play on a week morning, I am subject to the double R golfer. Retired and Rude. Could be you met one of the club-members.

  10. Always yell fore. and the direction of the ball.  Old timers are all about courtesy. If you hit them and you yelled fore, they would have laughed. Always look ahead of your ball. And ignore the one time grump too. You will encounter many more that are actually out of line, and you will still have to make your next putt. Golf is the only game all about you. Not them . He would have been just as mad if you screamed in his backswing, and gripped to his buddies about it. Sure he could have said it nicely, but it doesn't matter. Just hole the shot for birdie and scream real loud. After all. that would be something to make noise over.
