The LOSC Lille coach has blasted his players for conceding an own-goal against AS Saint-Etienne that lead to his side’s elimination from the competition
The 2010/2011 champions of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/France-c2899 were handed a cruel defeat at the hands of Saint-Etienne in Coupe de France last night after an own-goal allowed the hosts to get back on level terms.
Rudi Garcia was talking to reporters after the match and when asked about his reactions, the witty coach had a lot to say. The 49-year-old tactician stated that he has many regrets at the way his side played today. The boss said
that his side’s failure to into the break with a one-goal lead didn’t help their cause and had it been not for that ridiculous own-goal, things would have been different.
"We can have some regrets, especially not to have taken a one-goal lead into the break, which would have been the case had it not been for a ridiculous own-goal.”
The boss lamented the stupid own-goal but feels that apart from that goal; Lille’s performance wasn’t up to the mark. It was a very ordinary performance from the club from North France and the coach is far from pleased with that.
“That certainly would have changed the final result. Yes, there are regrets, because we really turned in an average performance tonight.”
Defending his shaky defence, Garcia said that LOSC’s defence did pretty well but they ran out of luck in the end. First two goals that Lille conceded were very lucky and the boss is not blaming his players for that.
“We were well organised in defence but luck just wasn't on our side, as you saw with the first two goals.”
The Frenchman added that his side lacked the required aggression and they weren’t dangerous upfront. Despite finding the net twice, Lille failed to take control of the game for which they were punished in the end. The boss said
that now, Lille can only qualify for Europe through league.
“Despite scoring twice, we really weren't dangerous enough to harbour hopes of qualifying. Now our only hope of reaching Europe is through the league."
