Bayer Leverkusen Sporting Director was left fuming after the loss and described it as ‘hugely disappointing’.
Bayer Leverkusen suffered a shock loss at the BayArena on Saturday, December 17. It was the club’s fifth defeat of the season and the loss deprived the team of climbing to the fifth spot. The opposition team was in the relegation
play-off place before the match which made it more embarrassing for the hosts.
Werkself now stand sixth on the Bundesliga standings table with 26 points from the 17 games played thus far and are 11 points adrift of the leaders Bayern Munich. The hosts conceded two times in the first-half and failed to create
enough chances to score and were downed comprehensively by the minnows.
Voller admitted that there will definitely be changes after the winter break as the team performed badly. He admitted that it was a sorry display from his team and has called for improvement after the break.
“We will now l**k our wounds and then, after Christmas, we will lay everything out on the table. It was very disappointing. You can at least try, but you could not see any of that with some of our players,” he was quoted as saying
in an interview.
The former player admitted that some players did not give their best for the match and took the opposition lightly which cost them the match. He further added that the team’s focus was totally on the UEFA Champions League knock-out
stage in which they are drawn against Barcelona. He claimed that most players thought that it would be an easy game for us and were complacent ahead of the match.
“It was a mental problem after the Champions League draw. Some of our players were clearly thinking about http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604 and not Nurnberg, even though we had warned about this in advance. Clearly our warning was not heard,” he concluded.
Bayer Leverkusen will take on http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/1-FSV-Mainz-05-c38166 when they return from the winter break in January. They will be looking to redeem themselves after the Nuremberg loss and get a win against Thomas Tuchel’s side at BayArena next month.
