The Bayer Leverkusen sporting director will be pleased if his side can ensure a top six finish by the end of this season.
Bayer Leverkusen sporting director, Rudi Voller, has breathed a sigh of relief after his side were able to come out with all three points against Hoffenheim at the weekend. Andre Schurrle score the only goal of the game in the
79th minute to leave Werkself just two points short of the fifth spot with as many games remaining in the competition.
Voller admitted that Leverkusen had to go through hard times in the last few weeks which deprived of their fifth spot and were taken over by http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/VfB-Stuttgart-c40879. However, he congratulated the players for responding perfectly to the crisis
situation as his side was in danger of losing the Europa League spot.
The sporting director now claims that the BayArena outfit could still finish fifth with the games against Hannover and Nuremberg remaining. He urged his side to try finishing at least in the top six which will keep Leverkusen away
from playing the Europa League qualifying stage.
While addressing sportinglife.com, Voller further added: "It is not a case of saying all's well that ends well, but it looks like we have come away with just a black eye in reaching our minimum aim for the season. Now we want to
defend at least sixth place, which would mean one round less in the qualifiers for the Europa League, and why shouldn't we aim for fifth place? It is only two points away."
The chief mused that there are some necessary reinforcements needed at the club and assured that new signings will be made before the start of next season. He also confirmed that the leadership role at the club will also be decided
once the 2011/12 season expires next month.
"We want to improve our squad so that we can aim even higher next season. We want to be one of the candidates for the Champions League. (General manager) Wolfgang Holzhauser and I will sit down at the end of the season and decide
then, and not before, what to do,” Voller concluded.
Leverkusen are currently sixth in the league standings with 48 points, three clear of seventh placed Hannover and two short of the fifth placed Stuttgart. Their next game against The Reds will take place on Saturday, April 28,
at the BayArena.
