Question:

Rudimental percussion- technique problem with double strokes?

Playing on a pad, I've noticed that the second stroke always tends to land outward from the first one, by about an inch or so. I've tried to correct it, but it's giving me problems. Any ideas on what the root of the problem is and how to correct it?

  1. keep light finger control on your sticks for the rebound stroke of the diddle for finer control! obviously matched grip is easier to master than traditional for this reason (& a couple others too). make sure your palms are facing down/not turned in toward each other as that will cause drift also....

  2. It's your lift.  I used to take lessons from the man himself...Mitch Markovitch..and I was the head percussionist for the ICEJ orchestra in Jerusalem, Israel.

Practice lifting your wrist so the stick is completely vertical after every stroke(90 degree angle, you should be able to feel it in your upper forearms) and then speed it up as you get better at it.  The key is to make every stroke sound identical.

Once you get it down you should be able to play a drum roll on any surface using just your hands.
