Rudy Fernandez agrees to a three year deal with Real Madrid – NBA Update
After a brief span with the Denver Nuggets which lasted for a season, shooting Rudy Fernandez is leaving the NBA, following in the footsteps of one Juan Carlos Navarro among many others to return to his homeland, Spain.
Fernandez has agreed to sign a three year deal with Real Madrid, a team he had grown fond of in the time he spent with them before the start of last season.
The news came in on Wednesday when Fernandez himself announced the agreement on clubs’ official website. He was very happy to return back to his home country and be part of the Madrid team.
"I come back here to be three years, which are the ones I have of contract, and I am very happy to return to this club.” – Fernandez
Fernandez had represented Madrid for a short while during the NBA lockout only to return to Denver. His ambition to win the Euro League has however lured him back to Spain.
"The Euroleague has influenced my decision, is a competition that every player wants to win.”
He also went on to praise the amount of work Madrid coach, Pablo Laso has done over the past few years and feels that given the amount of time, he can help the team go all the way to win the European Championship.
"The work of Laso loved it and it is important to continue with the core team, with little change and the same philosophy.”
The four years Fernandez spent in the NBA were disappointing and he could only manage to average 9.1 points per game. However, the main reason behind his decision to leave may have been because of the recent trades he has been
a part of.
Fernandez does accept that he has grown a lot as a player and by bringing his experience of playing the world`s best basketball league, he can be of great help for his new team mates.
"The bonus that I give to my colleagues is that I'm winning and I have experience in these competitions. I know this league and the role that I will be at Real Madrid,"
The 6 ft 6 in guard will also be the part of the Spanish contingent vying to win the gold medal in the 2012 London Olympics.
