Rudy g*y backs Doc Rivers or Gregg Popovich as next coach of Team USA – NBA News
As the triumph of the US basketball team at this year’s London Olympics wears down and becomes an afterthought, USA basketball and its chairman Jerry Colangelo have a big decision to make. They need to decide the next head coach
for team USA for the 2016 Olympics after Mike Krzyzewski resigned from the job after winning his second gold medal with the team in two Olympics.
Among the names being taken for the job, Doc Rivers of the Boston Celtics and San Antonio Spur's Gregg Popovich standout. The Memphis Grizzlies star forward Rudy g*y seems to agree.
g*y was answering a few questions for HoopsFix.com when he was asked who he thought would be a good replacement for Krzyzewski.
“Someone like Doc Rivers or maybe Coach (Gregg) Popovich – they have both done a great job where they are," replied g*y.
Popovich has earned his position in the NBA after coaching the Spurs over the past decade or so and keeping them relevant in the NBA. Doc Rivers, on the other hand, has taken a rather dangerous path to success.
Rivers was the head coach at Boston during the 2006-07 NBA season, when the Celtics finished with a 24-58 record. So, when the Celtics went through a major restructure that saw Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen being paired up with Paul
Pierce in Boston, Danny Ainge showed a great level of faith and trust in Rivers when he decided to keep him with the team for their new journey.
Rivers excelled under the new system and the new players, guiding the Celtics to an NBA title in the 2007-08 season. Since then, Doc has kept the Celtics alive in the Eastern Conference, and they have been one of the prominent
contenders for the Eastern conference crown every year after that, making deep runs in the playoffs each time.
This past season, the Celtics struggled with injuries problems throughout the season and their veteran players piled up huge minutes on a nightly basis, but they were still able to reach the Eastern Conference Finals, where they
lost to the Miami Heat in seven games.
Rivers has proven his mettle and his coaching skills as part of the Celtics turnaround over the past five seasons. Next year is looking even better for the Celtics with some roster improvements made during the summer. A coaching
gig for team USA would cement Rivers legacy in the NBA for years to come.
