Rudy Hartono wants Badminton Association of Indonesia to produce world class shuttlers
Indonesia’s Rudy Hartono, who is regarded as one of the greatest shuttlers of all time, said that the Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) should work in the right direction to produce world class shuttlers, who can bring glory to their country.
The 61-year-old Hartono believes that Badminton has become tougher as compared to the past. The badminton legend has carved his name in the badminton history books, winning the All England Championship eight times in his career.
"What makes today's game different is that matches are more competitive now compared to years ago, so you have to work harder and not give up easily," Hartono said.
He appreciated the facilities provided by PBSI to the current players and said that now players have more opportunities to become better competitors as compared to past players.
He further added, "We won with minimal support from the PBSI. Now shuttlers have all the things that we didn't have during our time."
Hartono, who clinched the title in the 1980 World Championships, said that in his time the shuttlers had to work hard to participate in the international events, but now players have more opportunities to compete in the international event, which is a healthy
sign for the growth of the players.
He suggested that those players who perform well in the training sessions and domestic events should be given a chance to represent their country at international level.
"Those who are successful can be rewarded by entering them in more international tournaments, while those who fail must be grounded for some time so they'll be able to work on their game and be motivated doing so," said Hartono.
The former World Champion also said that the players can achieve the heights of success in the age of 18 to 25, which is the perfect time for the shuttlers to prove their worth in the arena.
For the 2012 Olympic Games, PBSI will send three participants in each category of the game including Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles. The qualifying phase of the 2012 Olympics started on May 3 from the 2011
Malaysia Open GP Gold, where Indonesian shuttlers participated in each category of the game to earn ranking points for Olympics.
