  1. THE RENTALS ARE NASTY I WORKED AT A STORE THAT RENTS THEM THEY ARE NEVER CLEANED.They leave your carpets wet which rots them and the subflooring underneath.  Plus the dirt and smell  from the previous customer.I always go with Stanley Steemer My carpets are just about dry when they leave. They have a spray they put on to prevents stains . When you get a spot it comes up very easy.Plus you don't have to lift a finger. They usually have a coupon or deal online.

  2. ~~They are basically going to work the same except you will save tons of money, but must do the work. At Home Depot we rented the Rug Doctor for $25 for 24 hours, and got stains out I never figured could get out. Also came with furniture attachments so we did two chairs too. Our carpet looked brand new again. I strongly recommend getting the cleaner they sell for the machine it's $10. and works awesome. Plan on devoting a good part of your day, it's time consuming but very easy.~~

  3. I think the Rug Doctor machines work very well.  Just follow the instructions and don't use too much soap!  Rinse well and you should be all right.. .It also helps to have fans to dry the carpets faster.. .I've used them and have had GREAT results.. I DO have a professional come at least 1x a yr.  Usually after the summer!  It's worth it so you don't have to do it yourself!

Also, keeping shoes out of the main living areas and vacuuming everyday will keep stains, debris/dirt out of your carpet!  I

f you have a stain... Believe it or not a wet/dry shopvac is a terrific tool for removing stains...!  My 2 yr. old got into my make-up bag and spilled an entire bottle of liquid foundation on our light colored berber carpeting.  I used a wet dry shopvac to extract the foundation and then used a bucket of DAWN/WATER and extracted the water from the carpet... I repeated this several times.. Until the dinner sized plate stain was completely GONE!  In a pinch a shopvac is a marvelous tool!

    Good luck

  4. The thing with the rent-able and purchasable versions is that it is basically a clean up, or a touch up to brighten up your carpets. But the professionals are a much more the-rough cleaning. especially if your carpets are in bad condition.

  5. I've rented the HEAVY-duty Rug Doctor several times... it worked JUST FINE.  The key was to do it exactly to their instructions, and then do it again.  We do the carpets twice a year because of the dirt and dust up here at the ranch.

I own several rental properties, and will ALWAYS hire a professional to clean those carpets.  They're just QUICKER.
