Rugby, John Mametsa announces his early retirement
Blue Bulls’ John Mgwensi Mametsa, who is famously known as John Mametsa, announced his retirement last night, after a nine year provincial rugby career.
Mametsa, who was also known as ‘The fearless try scoring machine’ during his career, spoke to media last night and said, his playing days are over now and he wants to give more time to his family and business and this is the best time for him to retire from
the game.
"It is the right time for me to leave the game. I am still able to play, but after 10 years of top flight rugby, other issues in my life demand and deserve my time. What a privilege it was to play so many matches for the Blue Bulls and to share in the
unbelievable successes they had in that time".
The 29-year-old, Polokwane born player started his career as Winger for his provincial side Blue Bills in 2002 and since then he had been an integral part of the team. His try scoring ability helped his team to win the most number of matches during his era.
He was also the first black player, who played more than 100 games in Currie Cup. He also got the honour of playing in Super Rugby, when he made his debut in 2008, which is the major achievement of his career.
His early retirement made his fans sad, who will definitely miss him. His coach at Blue Bulls, Frans Ludeke also showed his grief.
Ludeke said he was a real brave and strong player and a proven finisher. His record for Bulls is marvelous and bulls will definitely miss him.
"His records for the Bulls and his status in the game remains unchallenged, the Blue Bulls family will forever appreciate his efforts for the team".
The owner of the Blue Bulls Company, Barend van Graan also admired his services for the Bulls.
He said, he was first black star for his club and helped his club a lot to enhance its value. Club is really proud to admit his services and he is one of great players which people have seen in Currie Cup. All the club members understand the reason behind
his retirement and wish him all the best for his new career.
