Rugby, the game for the brawny men
Most of us have knowledge about what is going on in the football world whether it is about the scrapping of Maradona or the sale of Liverpool. It might be because of the fact that football is poor man’s sports. Irrespective of being poor, there are some
sports which can be called as a ‘strong’ man’s sports such as Rugby. One does not need handful of cash to play it, he just needs a ball and plenty of strength.
Rugby, better known as a beast game, was originated in “Rugby School” in the late 18th century. There are statues of rugby codes in various countries. First is Rugby Union, administered by IRB (International Rugby Board); it is an amateur game
which is dominated by Australia, South Africa, Argentina, New Zealand, Ireland, England and Scotland. Second is the Rugby League which is administered by Rugby League International Federation. The amateur and semi-professional games are conducted of it in
USA, Russia, Lebanon, Europe and Australasia.
According to the different statuses codes, there are different laws the Rugby Union and Rugby League. Distinctive features common to both rugby codes include the oval ball and the ban on passing the ball forward, so that players can gain ground only by running
with the ball or by kicking it. As the sport of Rugby League moved further away from its union counterpart, rule changes were implemented with the aim of making a faster-paced, more try-oriented game.
There is a copy of Rugby as well in the national football league (NFL) in United States of America where players use protection to guard themselves. The game is almost a twin of natural Rugby and is followed madly in USA and Canada so much that matches of
College level are aired to promote the players and teams.
The format of Rugby Seven is most popular and widely played under the administration of Rugby Union. The Rugby World cup is also played in the format of Rugby seven. The event is held after every 4 years. The first World cup of Rugby was held in joint collaboration
of Australia and New Zealand in 1987, where New Zealand remained victorious. Six Rugby World cups has been conducted up till now, in which Australia and South Africa have taken home two titles, whereas England and New Zealand have lifted the trophy single
time. Lately the KIWIS (New Zealand) tops the World ranking chart of Rugby with the rating of 94.77 followed by Australia, South Africa, France, Ireland, England, Scotland and Argentina. The next big event, The Rugby World cup 2011 will be held in New Zealand
next year for the new World Champion.
The fans are just turning their attention to the world cup, as it would be a treat to see New Zealand play in their home ground and one could be sure the opponents will surely receive some pounding at the hands of giant kiwi players who just love their game.
Rugby is so loved in New Zealand that it is next to their religion and their traditional dance that accompanies the sport is just as amazing. It is a great sight to witness Kiwi rugby players performing their cultural dance.
