Rugby: Can anyone tell me?

Why a lot of the forwards have started to strap their legs up just above the knee? I have asked rugby playing friends, but no-one knows, and physiotherapists who think it might alter the point at which the quadriceps work from. But that doesnt explain why they are padded. Can someone who does it please explain. Thanks

  1. I am not too sure, but I thought it was mainly the players (second row) who get lifted in lineouts who have the strapping. I presumed this was to make the lift easier, as the grip from the front is just above the knee.

  2. It's on the 2nd row's and taller back row who might be jumping in the lineout.

There is strapping and usually a piece of rubber inside so that the lifters can get a better grip on the players legs.

  3. it is to help lifting in the lineout

  4. to supply grip to the lifter and only the lifted usually have it done to them.

  5. I think it may be to support the hamstrings when they are pushing in the scum
