Rugby Preview: Greg Inglis controversy finally ends
The twenty-three-year-old rugby superstar, Greg Inglis has been signed by South Sydney for three years, after his over-investigated contract which was finally accepted by NRL. To fit the Queensland and Australian champion, below the salary cap, the club
has been obliged to devolve the centre Beau Champion. Greg will be a part of Melbourne on a three year contract, taking to an end, a saga stretching back to October. Shane Richardson, the CEO for Rabbitohs said that hiring Greg Inglis was a very positive move
from Rugby League. He was pleased and proud to be bringing world class players to his club. He stated,
“The Rabbitohs is the Club which Greg wants to play for, the Club he believes in and the Club where he will play his best football.”
Richardson, along with his Corporate Partners and members, are looking forward for the season to start to see their investment (Greg) playing in South Sydney’s red and green famous jersey. The best football from Greg is yet to be seen, believes the CEO.
Initially, Inglis had made an oral agreement to sign with Brisbane but he turned his back on the agreement in November. He strained the Broncos to withdraw the deal. After the dispute, a legal bill of $113,000 was dangling over the champion for the court appearances.
He had to face charges of assault, which complicated the case yet further. NRL had to block the deal for Greg to join Sydney Souths last week, after quoting quite a few considerable third party contracts as related to the salary caps.
This year in October, the Storms uncovered the fact that Inglis owes the club $113,000 worth of legal fees. Not even a week after, South Sydney offered the champion a contract. Greg had to miss his first pre-season training at Broncos. The reason he gave
was the bad weather at Sydney, where he was residing. Justin Hodges, the future team member of Broncos condemned the treatment of Greg. He claimed that Greg is allowing for walking out of the Rugby League. Inglis backed his claim when he received an offer
from Toulon. In November, Broncos sent a last deadline to sign the contract. But then after no response from Inglis, they pulled out of signing the superstar.
