Rugby Special Report: Sonny Williams- Future of another All Black star doubtful
Sonny Bill Williams, ‘Punch and Run’
Sonny Bill Williams a 26 year mature Rugby player and a professional Boxer have made waves throughout the career. He reckons his boxing activities as his off-season training. Sonny has an element of surprise to his game and is mostly seen knocking out major
names in the ring. Williams who is ready to star in next year’s world cup is also looking forward to prove himself yet again in the ring this January. This news was a shock at first for the fans but it was justified as Williams had an agreement of playing
rugby alongside before signing the contract.
Sonny Williams, a 25-year old New Zealand rugby union player and a professional boxer made his debut appearance for All Blacks in November, against England. He is the second Kiwi International to play for All Blacks. The superstar also plays for Canterbury
Rugby Football union and is anticipated to also play for Crusaders. Williams has been honoured as the ‘International Newcomer of the year 2004’. He currently stands at 13th in world rankings as a rugby player.
Williams will be fighting Scott Lewis who has few major accomplishments under his belt. For example, when he knocked out Carl Webb a Queensland Rugby League prop, it was a huge upset. When last time Williams went in the ring, his opponent lasted for two
minutes and thirty seconds only. Sonny Bill Williams has been looking for a real competition since then. Scott Lewis seems to be a perfect opponent for Williams, as both are ready and desperate to claim another victory.
Match is scheduled the very same day when William’s teammates Crusader will be playing their first pre-season match for Super Rugby Season. Williams Rugby training is to be resumed from 1st February next year. Williams’s loyalty has been a question
mark, but after his rejection to a proposal from French Top 14 club, more international rugby is expected from the All-Black superstar. Williams has remained loyal to All Blacks since then, but rumours indicate that after the world cup he might be switching
to Europe or going back to boxing for good.
On the other hand, Sonny Bill William’s boxing trainer has agreed upon giving in more than his job description. Anthony Mundine former Dragons and NSW Origin star will also help Williams for the Rugby Union Season. William seems content with this decision
and is taking things into his hands.
''We are not back at training until February 1 and we have got to do our own pre-season, so this is pretty much me doing it myself." said Williams. Like always, he prefers taking matters into his own hands. He further said,
"I have been upfront with everyone.”
Williams expressed his faith in Crusaders and believes when he will join them in training in February, all he would have to do is prepare a game plan.
“I have got a pretty good group around me who can chuck the ball around, so I can keep my skills up that way,''
said Williams.
Sonny Bill, while explaining how he manages all sounded so casual and professional both. One could expect such brilliance from a player like him. On Monday, he does boxing, and then on Tuesday he does the speed work and the fitness sessions. Then he does
a bit of boxing the same night. Then on Wednesday, he swims. Williams said indifferently,
“There are just heaps of things like that I can do.'’
World XIII, Sonny Bill Williams is still a champion and has earned himself respect and true fans. However, a question that arises is the future of this star. Can the ring takeover All Black charm? And if it doesn’t, will he sign a contract with French club
and disappoint All Black lovers? These are the questions that will be answered in the coming year.
