Rugby Through The posts?

When a rugby game kicks off either at the start or during the game after a score, if the ball goes straight through the middle of the posts what happens? Is it just considered out of play? I assume they dont get 3 points

  1. Correct, it is out of play if the ball goes into touch in the dead ball area or touches or crosses the dead ball line. You do not get three points!

  2. from the kick off, if the ball crosses the goal line without touching a player, the opposing team may play on or ground the ball and drop out.

no mention of what happens in the case of a kick off "goal"

  3. no points

    drop kick 22 yard line

if player touches the ball down

    i think ??

  4. no it doesnt count as the ball was not in play

  5. Definately no 3 points, it doesn't matter if it happens to go through the posts that is coincidental, as mentioned if the ball is touched down by the defending team it is a 22 drop out or the ball can be played as normal. However if the ball goes through the posts and lands directly out of the back field then it is a penalty from the half way line(Rare as it would have to be about a 60 metre kick)

  6. The laws of rugby are clear on this matter. You wont be awarded 3 points if u get it through the posts. You wouldn't even think of doing that if you're the first five eight. Why? because it is highly likely that it will roll over the dead ball line which is a automatic 22 drop out or back to the 50m line scrum, i'm not really clear on those laws at the moment. But if it was a 22 drop out, there is no territorial gain if u try and drop kick it and goes through the posts because the opposition gets the chance of a drop out. If it was a scrum, thats a big gain for the receiving team so don't even think of trying it because its a lose win situation against u!

  7. You assume correctly, the 3 points do not count, as they do not come under the Laws and Regulation of Rugby 2007, Law 9: Method of Scoring.

From Law 13 of the Laws and Regulation of Rugby 2007 you will find Kickoff and Restart Kicks.

13.9 Ball Goes INTO THE IN- GOAL

    (a) if the ball is kicked into the in- goal without having touched or been touched by a player, the opposing team has three choices:

To ground the ball, or To make it dead, or To play on.

    (b) If the opposing team grounds the ball, or if they make it dead, or if the ball becomes dead by going into touch –in-goal or on or over the dead ball line, they have two choices:

To have a scrum formed at the centre, and they throw in the ball or To have other team kick off again.

    (c) If they opt to ground the ball or make it dead, they must do so without delay. Any other action with the ball by a defending player means the player has elected to play on.

I hope this was of some help.

    Best of Luck

  8. no points champ just a 22 meter drop out if the player touches down behind the goal line
