Rugby Update: Italian Squad for Six Nations 2011
Italian Coach, Nick Mallette, has released the list of players who will be playing for Italy in the next month’s Six Nations 2011. The 24 man squad for the first two games has been named after much consideration and risk. The Italians have to take on Ireland
at Stadio Flaminio on 5th February and have a fixture against England a week later in Twickenham.
Fly half Kristopher Burton and prop Ignacio Rouyet are surprisingly two new additions to the squad with no such experience. The pair was not included in November international fixtures but has been called now in Nick Mallett’s Six Nations squad. Martin Castrogiovanni
from Leicester is also in the squad that compromises of eleven players from Treviso.
Fly half Craig Gower and forward Mauro Bergamasco were the two key players who were already ruled out of the Six Nations last year due to knee and shoulder operations respectively. Tito Telbadi, who was in starting line as scrum half in November internationals,
has been skipped over and Edoardo again looks in form to play at number nine, despite the fact he has not been a regular for Treviso, a Celtic League side. Hooker Leonardo Ghiraldini has returned from injury, after playing last time in November. Gonzalo Garcia
also made his way back to join the squad.
Italy finished last in previous Six Nations competition and will be looking forward to disallow any such results in this year’s tournament. Italy played five matches and won just one out of them and losing four without drawing any. They ended up at the bottom
with only two points on the table, while France topped the charts with ten points and winning all five games that they played. This tournament is a major build up for the coming World Cup.
