Rugby Update: Knee injury rules out Stephen Jones for 4 weeks
Scarlets and Wales’ fly-half Stephen Jones is likely to be out from rugby for a period of 4 weeks due to a knee injury.
Jones, who has played 95 international test matches for his country, got the injury last week when he was playing for his club Scarlets in Heineken Cup’s game against Treviso last weekend.
A spokesman from Jones’ club Scarlets has also confirmed the news and said that his knee injury will keep him out from rugby for an approximate period of 4 weeks and he will have a scan of his knee today.
“The region’s medical team have reassessed Jones and stated that early signs indicate the Wales international has a minor knee ligament strain, which will probably keep him out of action for up to four weeks.”
Jones’ injury means that the Welsh star will have to miss the Boxing Day match against arch-rivals Ospreys, at the Liberty Stadium but the Aberystwyth born player will be expected to back in the Scarlets’ biggest match of the season against Leicester Tigers
mid of next month.
Jones’ injury caused a huge blow for Scarlets, as their star player and Welsh Captain Matthew Rees is also injured and he will have to pass a fitness test to get his chance in Scarlets’ squad touring Italy.
Scarlets’ coach Nigel Davies, who was not happy with the team’s performance in the last match against Treviso, has warned their players that whole team has to work hard if they want to win the remaining games of the season. He said team’s performance was
far below than mark and all the players have to fix their problems.
Davies said, “We blew a couple of great opportunities and so we’re disappointed with the performance. We know we are a lot better than that, however, we achieved what we set out to do and a bonus-point win is very important in the group we are in.”
He further went on to say that, they weren’t as good as they should have been without the ball and if given opportunities one knows they’re going to be competitive.
Davies also spoke about Joes’ injury and showed his disappointment. He said Jones was performing very well and he had to be part of the team for the remaining matches and his absent will definitely disturb the team’s combination.
On the other hand, Welsh coach Warren Gatland, who was initially worried about Jones’ injury as wings Shane Williams and George North are also injured, is now satisfied after the specialist has confirmed that he will be absolutely fit for the upcoming Six
Nations, where Wales will face England in the opening match of the season on 4th of February.
Undeniably, Jones’ injury is a huge blow for Scarlets as he is the key player and a star performer for them but it is very lucky for Wales that they do not have any international match in the next one month and Jones, who has scored 859 points for his country,
will be fit for the Wales’ next international match.
