Rugby Update: Saracens Signs new talent- Owen Farrell's contract extended
The 19 year old fly half Owen Farrell got his contract renewed with Saracens today. He is among the lot of six other young players who Saracens have signed from England. The talented fly half is the son of current Saracens coach and former Great Britain
rugby league Andy Farrell. The other players who have been given this bright opportunity are hooker Jamie George, flanker Jackson Wray, wing James Short, lock George Kruis and scrum half Luke Baldwin.
Owen Farrell is a rugby union player, who is playing for Guinness Premiership and his primary position is centre but he also plays as wing or fly half. He has the record of being the youngest player ever to play in professional English rugby union game.
He played for Saracens exactly eleven days after his 17th birthday. This record was broken by George Ford of Leicester Tigers in November 2009. George Ford happens to be the son of ex Rugby League International, Mike Ford. Owen Farrell has also
been loaned by Bedford Blues in the 2010 – 11 season. The 6ft 2in wing/fly half was born in Great Manchester and studied at St John Fisher Catholic High School. His other notable relatives from the world of Rugby are Sean O’Loughlin and Liam Farrell.
Mark McCall, the director of Rugby for Saracens said, “There is no doubt we have a really special group of youngsters at the club.” He seemed very satisfied with the signings and is looking forward for even a better season next year. Saracens have
signed new deals with almost twelve players this season, which include the rugby greats and big fishes like Gavin Henson, Jacques Burger and Charlie Hodgson.
McCall believes that the new combination of oldies and new talent will gel in together to give positive results. He said,
“It's exciting to see them develop as players on the field in the Premiership and also as individuals off the field thriving within our personal development program.” The future of Saracens is in the hands of these new emerging stars like Owen Farrell
as they have a bright opportunity to prove their ground and learn from the senior lot.
