  1. I think true

  2. On the steam radio many years ago, the late Jimmy Edwards gave the definition of a "real gentleman" as:

"one who gets out of the bath to go to the toilet."

Having played rugby for 30 years, I sincerely hope that EVERY rugby player I encountered within 30 minutes of a match ending was a gentelman through and through!!

  3. True.

Rugby is a game for thugs, played by gentlemen.

Football is a game for gentlemen, played by thugs.

  4. False, Its a game played by macho, meathead bullies.

It was compulsory at my school and no way did it involve any consideration or respect.

  5. i htink  faulse

  6. False, thers alot of b****ck squeezing in the scrum, thats not something by gentlemen.

  7. It's a game played by gentlemen. I live in India and rugby isn't that popular here. I go to the army camp near my place every Sunday for a good afternoon of rugby. Most of the people who show up there are Europeans and well to do Indians. Calling them thugs would be an injustice. I have many other games like cricket , football and snooker. Here are my findings for the gentleman index (out of five)

       Sport           Gentleman Index

    1.Cricket         2

    2. Football       1

    3. Snooker      3

    4. Rugby         5

Is that a surprise to you? Well I have an explanation maybe? Yes of course I do! Whenever I play cricket we end up breaking someones window or the batsman and the bowler gets into a scuffle with the umpire to reverse his decision if he has declared the batsman "out" or or not.

And football, the poorer people of our city normally plays this game and the usual place is on the streets even when grounds are available. It is really difficult to walk around with a ball flying here and there. If it hits you, it really really hurts! And the referee-player scuffle exists here too.

Ah Yes! Then there's snooker! The whole room is filled with smoke and God bless you if you're still alive and haven't reached kingdom come by CO poisoning!

In rugby though, the players are very kind and if anyone is injured ( it happened only once) everybody rushes to his aid! Rugby Rulz!!!

  8. True when the game was amateur, but sadly not now.

  9. Sadly I think that this is now a bit of a fallacy, Having played Rugby for most of my youth and now watching club Rugby, I have witnessed a growing thuggish attitude within the game. The game has always respected the decision of the Ref even if it wasn't the popular one, but now they get football style abuse from the touch & sometimes the players.

BUT it still beats football hands down for sportsmanship, and a family friendly atmosphire.

So on the whole yes it is played by Gentlemen and true Sportsmen.

  10. I think it depends on where in the world you are.

Here in New Zealand I would say it was false.  Rugby here is a game played by almost everyone.  The private schools play it, but so does every other school.

However in Australia (and maybe other countries) rugby is very much the sport of the elite (i.e. it is played at private schools and not elsewhere (as strongly)).

Generalisations always fall over, so while I cannot say that this one is true, perhaps it leans towards being true more than many other sports.

  11. a gentleman cannot be determined singly on whether they play rugby or not.

a broader spectrum is required, considerations should be from life - manners - how considerate he is - his sense of right and wrong - helpful - generosity etc

  12. True.

What happens on the field stays on the field.

  13. Well they play the game fair and square, they are big, rough, tough, but in my experience truly gentlemen !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. It is true, rugby is very competitive but its is played with skill and companion...

  15. Possibly but it is also played by thugs. I play club rugby weekly, the lower down the club you go the more thugs you get. In the 1st and 2nd teams you get mostly a decent sort but as many football types play rugby to be honest.

I think the misnomer that Rugby is a game played by gentleman is to do with the fact that it is a game with lots of rules and therefore because it is more complicated it tends to attract different types of people. Also a lot of grammar schools choose to teach Rugby and not Football (not to mention private and public schools). In the real world Rugby is played by all sorts. Also theres a fashion aspect to it like snowboarders dont like skiers and vica versa if you know what i mean!

  16. Rugby is a game played by gentlemen who have that wild mean streak. It's a total release to take out everything during a game. And hey, if u mean gentlemen as in men, girls play just as good!

  17. True

  18. I'd say true as you don't see rugby players splashed all over the tabloids for beating up their partners or gunning down an elderly man. The rules that apply on the pitch stay on the pitch, there sportsmanship is impeccable.
