Rugby players to appear in court over charges of rape
A pair of international rugby players, who were arrested yesterday in Cape Town on charges of rape, will appear in court today. The names of the players remain undisclosed by the local police owing to identification problems. The pair was arrested yesterday at the Protea Hotel in Sea Point for raping a 29-year-old woman.The Cape Town police revealed that the accused players belonged to a club of Uruguay and had been staying in a hotel in Cape Town for a week.
The police took the pair to its detention center and asked the remaining team members to help them look for more suspects.
The police have confirmed the arrest of the rugby players and said they are due to appear in court today. Police spokesman Captain, Frederick van Wyk, told the media that the team along with supporting staff was taken to the police station for the purpose of identification. He further said, “They were arrested in their hotel room and they will appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of rape.”
On the other hand, the lawyer of the two suspects, Gary Jansen, has revealed that both players have denied the allegations. However, he confirmed that the whole team was taken to the police station on Friday night. He added, “The police did try to hold an identity parade because there was an allegation that more people were involved, but they were not able to do it because it was short notice and there were logistical problems”.
The spokesman of the club told revealed the players belong to Lobos team, a local club of Punta del Este, in Uruguay. The team was in Cape Town for a training session with an ex rugby star of South Africa. Jansen further said the team would play couple of club matches in Cape Town before flying back to Uruguay.
The pair would also file a petition for their bail in the court.
