Me and a group of friends are entering a rugby sevens tournament. Any tips or suggestions of good tactics or strategy/positioning anyone could give. We know the rugby basics many of us played union back in school, but never played sevens

  1. always try and be in support in sevens, you never know when your required, thus when running with the ball try and find your support and stay on your feet as long as you can after making a break.

i find that looking around the fringes of rucks is a good place to find gaps, just a simple dummy and your away. be careful of this when defending though.

also dont be afraid to hit it up in the middle sometimes, a simple structured ruck can provide a good platform and if done well enough, a straight runner can unexpectedly break the line as the defence drifts.

on defence, always cover behind the main defence line if no one is already and dont overrun your player as this makes it easier for them to step inside.

a good way to practice defending is to lie flat on your stomach and jump up practicing tackling.

the biggest key to sevens is fitness, look at any of the international 7's teams and you'll see that the top teams such as NZ, SA, Fiji, Samoa etc can all play at a high intensity, most points in games are scored near the end of games due to one team losing focus and stamina.

overall sevens is a complex game, go to slow and you get left for dust, go to fast and you run past.

good luck, support and no fear

  2. im a Fijian rugby player and play 7's.

The whole point of 15's is 2 get takled but 7's you need to run and step. U must use your brain and skills. Read  the game and chek 4 open gaps. defend people off.

Also go on youtube and look up william ryder. watch a couple of his matches and u'll understand

    hop this helps

  3. Your best advantage will be speed. In sevens you try to avoid contact rather than set the ruck and reset your back as there is obviously only seven of you. I find the best way to win sevens games are to get the ball quickly to the outside and just drive the sidelines. If the other team happends to be faster than you then try to throw them off with quick, unexpected passes.

  4. Basically run a back line and all their moves.  Getting around the and behind the opposition is the way to go.  Remember you have a lot of ground to work with and less then half the players on a field then usual.

Also focus upon the one on one tackle, rip and steal.

  5. When in attack:

Keep the ball alive. Use any backline move you can think of but remember that alot of the time you'll have to improvise. Use the speedsters of your team; there is no point in giving the ball to the bigger, slower guys when the quick guys have such great oppurtunities to make heaps of brakes. Also remember to use the chip kick just to get it over their line.

    When in defence:

Remember to rush up on the defence as quickly as possible and give them no time to complete different moves. Remember to cover while defending, as no matter how good your team is, the other side is bound to make one of two lucky brakes (unless they have no legs or something). Also remember to practice one-on-one defence, as this is the usual scenario in games.

  6. - you shouldn't run into contact

  7. Wheel the scrum all the time to attack with the ball. Quick passes and you ALWAYS have to make your tackle. If you miss your tackle in 7's, that guy/gal will always score! Good luck!!!

  8. If you see a gap has closed up, stop running, take a step back, and try and create another one

Also, try scrumming illegally..but play the ref on that one
