i can't decide whether to go for a career in rugby union or rugby league. I have played rugby union all my life and have been to the gym constantly to get the physique i need. After a rugby union match a man who i am guessing was a rugby league scout told me i would be a great rugby league player and asked to talk to my dad. my dad told me that the man wanted me to trial with manchester. do i leave rugby union the game i have played for all my life or join league the game where i have a better chance in playin professionally

  1. ermm, im a union fan myself

but you should go for league, especially if you been scouted

if you can run quick and are strong, leagues for you

    good luck :)

  2. I'm an ex Rugby union player but now train an under 10's league side. At this age group up to say under 15's I would encourage any one to play league. You get more ball in league at this level, with fewer rules than union there is more game time as the ref isn't constantly blowing up, not just this but it's more of a hands game rather than a kicking one, so all the kids get a fair chance to show their stuff.

As children grow older with the skills they have learnt and developed at league level, this can only benefit them in the union game.

I hope this helps and all the best.

  3. If the scout thought you would be great as a league player that must be an indicator of your potential.

Try joining a league team for a season and see if you like it...I know the lure of a professional career must be strong.  But, it's important that it is something that will love doing week in and week out.

I'm not sure where you're from but league is the little brother to union here in NZ but in Oz and other countries, league is the better choice professionally

I think both codes are awesome

All the best with your decision...............

  4. league for sure

  5. league

you can have more chance of playing internationally.

good luck in which either one you chose :)

  6. as an ex american football player, i prefer union

i dont like automatic stoppage for downs, reminds me too much of practice touch play, of course im a prop and the rucks are much more exciting than just scrums and lineouts

  7. both games have practically the same kind of players

i don't think that your skill would become worse by going to league, it would be a different experience definitely. Its not unheard of league players later changing to union or the other way around. Thats what i heard Tana umaga did - he started out in league.

but i guess that a career in league or union is still a career in rugby, maybe after a few seasons in league you could consider changing to union and it would be easier than if you hadn't done league earlier.

i say go for the league, and congratulations

also man good luck, you must be one good player.

  8. i prefer union, but if youre being looked at by league scouts and not union i say go for it
