Rugby update, shoulder operation ends Tom Rees’ season
England and London Wasps flanker Tom Rees has been ruled out from rest of the season, after he requires a 3rd operation for his right shoulder.
London-born player had only made his return in Rugby last March after remaining on sideline for 11 months due a prior operation of his same right shoulder. Rees, who played 10 matches for his club during current season, was continuously having pain in his
shoulder throughout the season, which led him to consult a specialist, who recommended him to undergo one more operation that will keep him out from Rugby for a period of six months. Rees’ operation means that now his chances to play in World Cup, which will
be held in September next year in New Zealand, are over.
Wasps’ director Tony Hanks, who was talking to media last night, confirmed the news of Rees’ injury and said his injury has really disappointed the whole club and it is a huge blow as Wasps badly needed Rees contribution.
"It is bitterly disappointing for him. We were starting to see the Tom we have come to expect again but he started to develop a persistent pain and it was having an impact on his daily life. Injury has scarred his career to date but he remains our club captain
and we look forward to seeing him back on the field. We are not setting a timeline on when he will be back but it is highly unlikely to be this season."
Along with Wasps, Rees’ injury is a huge blow for England as well as England manger Martin Johnson was expecting him in the next year’s Six Nations and World Cup squad, which are 2 major tournaments in Rugby. Rees has represented England in 15 international
test matches since he made his international debut in 2007 but unfortunately he has not been able to play any international test match for his country from 2008 due to consistent shoulder problem and now this new shoulder operation will keep him out approximately
for another 6 months.
Undeniably, Rees’ injury is a major blow for both England and Wasps, especially Wasps who will have to play without him during current season. But his club hopes he will recover timely as he always did in past and will back with full potential in the new
season.
