Rugby update: Careless injury rules out Lee Byrne for 5 weeks, likely to face disciplinary action
The Ospreys and Welsh full-back Lee Byrne, who failed to attend a union’s appointment with the doctor, is likely to face disciplinary action.
The story goes that, Lee Byrne got a thumb injury in the last match of the recently concluded autumn internationals against All Blacks. The injury initially didn’t look like a serious one but Welsh Rugby Union still took an appointment with specialist to
see his injured thumb but he did not attend the appointment. Thereafter, the injury took serious shape and latest news has confirmed that he has been ruled out from rugby for five weeks.
Chris Towers, Ospreys team’s doctor revealed the nature of his injury while talking to media yesterday. He said Byrne has a fracture at the base of the thumb and he won’t be available for the selection for an estimated period of five weeks.
Both the Ospreys and Welsh Rugby Union are not happy with his act and probably take action against him in the shape of financial penalty.
After his careless act, a spokesman from union has also confirmed the news and said yes WRU is deciding what sort of action should be taken against him.
Spokesman said, the Welsh Rugby Union is very disappointed by Byrne’s careless act and they are conducting their own evaluation and taking the suitable action internally.
Byrne’s club coach Jonathan Humphreys, who was talking to the media about his injury yesterday, said that Byrne had a thumb injury and he should have had a scan but he did not. The negligence caused even more danger for his injury and now he has to stay
out from rugby for a longer period than he had to face before.
The Ospreys released a strong-worded statement about the status of Byrne’s injury yesterday and hugely criticized him on his careless behaviour. They have also decided to take action against him, which is expected to be announced in the next few days.
Undeniably Byrne’s action is totally a careless act, which caused damage to his club Ospreys and country Wales as well along with Lee Byrne himself and he should be punished for his casual behaviour.
