Question:

Ruger 10/22?

I have a Ruger 10/22 that I havent shot in a few years and just recently I took it out and had a blast with it. I forgot how accurate and fun it was to shoot. I then decided that I may want to upgrade it a bit and so I started looking around and there are so many stock/barrel combos for it I have no clue where to start. I mean my rifle shoots very well and I am tempted to just leave it be because I dont think its going to shoot any better with a new barrel and stock. Has anyone tinkered with one of these and if so, what were the results? Any good brands of barrels to go with, or should I just leave it be? Thanks

  1. The sky is the limit. I have one mostly stock with Eagle Zephyr sights and an OD/Black paint job (Brownells Aluma-Hyde II) Epoxy-paint. the second has a Butler creek heavy barrel and full size montecarlo stock. The end of the barrel is milled to 1/2"x28 TPI for a SDS-6 suppressor. When the suppressor is on a different firearm the threads are protected by an M-16A1 flash hider. To be politically correct mind you. and it also has a Guide Gear 4-16X50 Illuminated mil-dot reticule, 30mm scope mounted on a 1' Weaver base and Weaver tac 30mm mounts.

Hey a ton of tune up parts are available at redstararms.com

  2. If you're happy with it as is, let it be.

The added mass of the heavy barrel makes the gun

steadier to hold offhand, but makes for a lousy 'field carry` gun.

I built up a combo for rim-fire silhouette and it works well,

but wouldn't want to hunt with it.

You would probably be happy with a target hammer

    and sear trigger kit though.

It really improves that stock trigger, and installation is

only a mildly finicky 'bolt on'.

  3. Leave that gun alone because it shoots well and buy a used one cheap. Then do whatever you like to that one. I suggest a krinker conversion they look awsome and are fun to shoot. Just google Krinker to see one.

  4. Hey, if it's shooting well, don't mess with it.  This is a case of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."  The 10/22 is a fun gun to play with and add stuff to but in the final analysis, you want a gun that is accurate.  Pretty doesn't mean a thing if it isn't accurate.  According to what you are saying, your gun is accurate so, if I were you, I wouldn't mess with it.  Just enjoy it the way it is.

I can't imagine why you would want a new barrel but if you do decide to go that route, take a look at the barrels by E.R.Shaw.  There are none finer.  Go to www.ershaw.com and look at what they have.  All of their barrels are custom made and run about $150 to $200 depending on what you want.  I recently bought an E.R.Shaw barrel chambered for the .17 Mach II for my Ruger 77/22.  It is a standard profile with helical fluting.  It is a fine looking barrel but more importantly, it is a tack driver.  I changed my barrel because I wanted to change the chambering of the rifle to the .17 mach II.  I already have other rifles chamberred for .22 that are good shooting guns so I wanted to get one of the .17 calibers.  This was the cheapest and best route and, because the barrel is so easily changed, it is now a 2 caliber rifle.  All I have to do to make it a .22 again is to replace the old barrel, about a 5 to 10 miinute job.  You can do the same with your 10/22 if you want.  Because it is now chambered for the .22 long rifle cartridge, your only choice for a .17 caliber is the .17 Mach II.  The .17 HMR is too long for the 10/22 action.  If you had a 10/22 mag., it's action is long enough that you can convert it to a .17 HMR.  That's all you have to do is to change the barrel and everything else will work with the .17 cartridge.

  5. I would leave it alone and purchase another rifle. Ruger makes a 10/22 that has a bull barrel already on it. So why pay for gunsmithing and all that work when a new one thats built the way you want is already available......

Have you considered the purchasing a more powerful rifle... I have a Ruger Mini 14 and a Ruger Mini 30 and these rilfe are fun to shoot....
