The Police chief has called out to hand a serious punishment to tackle hooliganism, after a number of spectators created havoc during last weekend’s crucial league game between Schalke and Borussia Dortmund
The security official stated that the coming Ruhr derbies can be played behind closed doors, without the presence of any supporters in the stadiums. This is because of the violence that happened during Borussia Dortmund and Schalke
clash on Saturday. Both sets of fans created a riot that damaged the reputation of football.
The Black Yellows' police president Norbert Wesseler feels that action should be taken against the guilty, as 180 people were hand-cuffed after causing havoc. Moreover, a food place in Dortmund was robbed as fans threw things from
the restaurant at each other.
The chief of police claimed that an event like this should not have occurred and must take measures to prevent it from happening in future matches. He said they might ban the visiting supporters or change the location of the clashes
to a neutral stadium.
"We have arrived at a point where we must consider whether future games need to take place without visiting fans, or if they need to be moved," the police president was quoted as saying in an interview.
The police head stated that further matches can be contested without any spectators if the issue is not resolved immediately. He conceded that rioters wished to create violent and hurt people; therefore they have to be punished.
"There might be the possibility of ghost matches if clubs and fans don't act soon. [Hooligans] wanted the fixture to hurt each other. A game with such violent potential, I would have to ban," he added.
The BVB chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke also agrees with Wesseler, but stressed that they should be cautious not to stereotype all supporters as hooligans. He suggested they cannot blame everyone for the riot but can take action
against at least the trouble-makers.
"They are at risk of not only a stadium ban, but also civil action," the BVB CEO finally stated.
Watzke conceded that the rioters can face a stadium ban and could also be punished by the legal system.
