Rui Machado dumps Teymuraz Gabashvili to advance into the 2nd round – Poznan Porsche Open 2011 CH
Third seed, Rui Machado of Portuguese trashed Russia’s Teymuraz Gabashvili in straight sets at the Poznan Porsche Open, a clay court tournament held in Poland. He registered a 6-4, 6-4 victory over the 26-year-old Russian to advance
into the second round on Monday.
World number 96, Machado eased past the Russian, ranked thirty-eight places below him, in one hour and thirty-five minutes on their first head-to-head.
The Faro native, Machado raged into the opening set and got the first blood in the very first game to take the lead. He lost his lead in the fourth game after gifting away his serve and squared the scores at 2-2. However, the Portuguese
broke Gabashvili’s serve again in the ninth game and clinched the opener with a 6-4 win by holding his serve in the proceeding game.
He produced a similar first serve share of 64 percent and registered a convincing 57 percent win on it. Machado also saved four out of five breakpoints and converted both breakpoint chances to his advantage which made the difference.
27-year-old Portuguese kept his momentum in the final set and held his opening serve in the second game to level the scores against the Russian. He then founded the desiderated break in the fifth game and took the lead for the
first time. Despite losing the lead in the seventh game, Machado roared back in the following game and eventually sealed the set with a 6-4 win again.
The Portuguese earned amazing stats this time as he clobbered a much better first serve share of 80 percent as opposed to Russian’s 56 percent and earned a fabulous 75 percent win on it. Furthermore, Machado saved one out of two
breakpoints faced and cashed in both breakpoint chances to his advantage.
The Portuguese veteran had inconsistent form this season. He was ousted from early rounds of many tournaments but clinched titles at Marrakech and Rijeka Challenger Tour events. However, Machado exited from the opening rounds of
all three Grand Slam events of the year.
Up next for Machado is the winner of the match between Czech Jan Hajek and local wild card entrant Piotr Gadomski.
Sixth seed, German Dustin Brown secured a second round place earlier that day. He made quick in-roads as he broke his opponent, Tomasz Bednarek of Poland, serve twice to win the set with a 6-3 score line.
The German lost his ways in the second set and after losing a single serve, he suffered a 4-6 defeat.
26-year-old then re-focused in the decider with a single break of serve, he  sealed the set with a 6-4 win and advance in this event.
