Rule by Night sent off as the 7 to 5 favourite to win the Gravesend Handicap
Steven Asmussen trained 4-year-old colt, Rule by Night, is the one to look out for in the 52nd running of the Gravesend Handicap on 17 December, 2011, at Aqueduct race track. Gold Square’s, Rule by Night, is the favoured and sent off as the 7
to 5 to win the race.
Moderately raced in 2011, Rule by Night will carry a weight of 119 pounds and will be ridden by jockey Junior Alvarado, as the pair will break from post number 4.
The Gravesend Handicap is run over a distance of 6 furlongs over the Aqueduct’s dirt track and the race is restricted for 3-year-olds and above. Six colts and geldings will participate in the race, and the one that stands out of them all is the Newmarket
based, Deerslayer, who will make his American debut against five other sprinters.
Amy Weaver trained 5-year-old gelded son of Rahy is coming off a neck victory in a claiming race at Langfield. Compared to the favourite, Rule by Night, Deerslayer has been raced heavily this year with 15 starts, and the win at Langfield was his sixth of
the year with all sprinting as three came on turf and three on all weather tracks.
“The plan is to get him sold and for him to remain in America,” said Weaver, 30, who will be saddling her first American starter as a trainer. “He’s American-bred, and fetched $500,000 as a yearling. He handles dirt and Polytrack well and we chose this spot
hoping he will take to American racing.”
On the other hand, Rule by Night, is coming off a 4th place finish in the Grade 3 Bold Ruler Stakes to winner Calibrachoa at about seven furlongs on 6 November, 2011, at Aqueduct race track.
Sangaree and Caixa Eletronica finished second and third, respectively, as the winner Calibrachoa covered the seven furlong distance in 1 minute and 21.32 seconds.
Prior to the Grade 3 Bold Ruler, Rule by Night won the Duck Dance on dirt at about six and a half furlongs at Belmont Park on 9 October, 2011, as she defeated Sunrise Smarty and Flat Bold.
