Question:

Rule change for "bowlliards"?

If you have a copy of the BCA rulebook, turn to the section on "Bowlliards". It's actually a very interesting game. It combines aspects of games with an open break shot like 8-ball and 9-ball and the call-shot aspect of straight pool. My idea for a rule change is in regards to the opening break shot which occurs at the start of each frame. According to the current rules, any balls pocketed on the break get spotted and the player takes ball in hand behind the headstring. My suggestion for a change is that any balls that get pocketed stay down and the player should start from where the cue ball lies. This way, you are rewarded for having a good break and playing good position, not penalized. Think about it, if you pocket three balls on the break, now you have three balls frozen together in a line. It doesn't seem fair. If they're going to give you ball in hand, I think you should get it anywhere on the table or as I suggest, play from where the cue ball lies. Any thoughts?

  1. Sounds like a new game I'll be trying.

In bowling all ten pins are on the lane before the ball is rolled and the bowler is behind the line.

Perhaps that's what the inventor was thinking - all 15 balls should be on the table and shooter has to begin the inning behind the line.

I can see your point of view on keeping balls down on the break. But in keeping with the name "bowl-liards" beginning behind the line would seem right.

  2. What you suggest would make the game too easy. You don't have to run 10 to get a strike, you just need a strong break and good position to start. If you don't get a good break where you have a good first shot, then it is easy to gutter gutter. Having balls be spotted after the break forces you to plan a way to break up the cluster. It makes it more like straight pool or equal offense - just will fewer balls on the table.

I would expect that the inventor(s) considered what you suggested when creating the rules.

  3. Well fellas I think ill set this one out im not that fam. with the game i would have to read the book but you could mod. the rules like bar tourns are but to make it official I guess you could petition the bosses at the site im not sure what the process would be.
