  1. its pretty much the complete opposite of european "football"

  2. It's rather comlicated for such a small space. Go to wikipedia.com for the details

  3. very basic: the field is 120 yards long. 10 yards at each end are called the end zones. the  field is then divided by 10 yards (10 20 30 40 50 40 30 20 10) the goal is to pass or run the football into the opposing teams endzone (called a touchdown). doing so will score you 6 points. afterwards you can either kick a field goal or run for 2. if you kick a field goal, you try to kick the ball between the yellow posts. this will get you 1 point. or you can try and go for 2 points. to go for 2, you make another play from i believe the 10 yard like (correct me if im wrong). if you score another touchdown, you get 2 points. there are also other ways to score, such as safetys. a safety is when you get tackled with the ball in your own endzone. the other team scores for that. that is really rare though. after you score, you kick off to the other team. basically, youre at one end, and theyre at the other. kick the ball as far as you can. they pick up the ball, and run as far as they can until they get tackled. then they are on offense. each tackle is called a down. there are 4 downs. for example, if you get tackled once, youre now on 2nd down. if you get tackled again, youre now on 3rd. if you get tackled one more time, its 4th down. most people on 4th down will punt the ball, to risk turning it over at the position theyre at. this will put the ball further down the field and give the other team more distance they have to cover. however, from the line of scrimage (the place where u start with the ball) on first down, there is another line 10 yards up. if you cross this line with the ball, it goes back to first down. for example:

you start with the ball on the 20 yard line.

if you cross the 30 yard line, its first down again.

lets say run the ball and make 3 yards (runs are used for low yardage gain). youre now on the 23 yard line, but its 2nd down with 7 yards to go. this is called 2nd and 7

now you pass the ball for an 11yard gain.

your now on the 34 yard line, and its first down because u passed the 30 yard line. you know have to pass the 44 yard line to make first down again.

the rules are much more complex than that. there are tons of different positions to play (center, quarterback, halfback, fullback, runningback, safety, corner, lineman, etc...) but that should give you a basic idea if youre just looking to play around with some friends

  4. There's a lot to know.  Rules, referee signals, team makeup, etc.  There are many great books on the subject.  If you'd rather look it up on-line, here's a website that's clear and concise:
