Question:

Rule on Lutheran Godparents...?

My husband and I want to have our daughter baptized. I am Catholic and he is Lutheran. I have agreed to baptize her Lutheran but I don't really know the rules. I know for Catholics, you can have one godparent, and if you have two then it must be a man and a woman. I was trying to do a little research but haven't really found a site that can explain the Godparent rule to me for Lutherans. The main problem we are having is chosing a godfather. I would like to have my brother and he would like to have one of his. Is that allowed in the Lutheran Church? Or can we have more that 2 godparents? I guess I am a little naive when it comes to other religions, I know that Catholic and Lutheran are all Christian but not sure on the specifics.

So if anyone can enlighten me or point me in a direction to find out more information I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you

  1. I'm baptized and raised Lutheran.  I had 3 godparents.  2 men and 1 woman.  The important philosphy with lutheran godparents is just to be a good person willing to raise your child according to God's word in the unlikely event that you cannot.  Lutherans aren't as strict as Catholics about who are godparents, so long as they are willing to be spiritual guides to the children entrusted to them.  If you are still uncertain, talk to the pastor who will be performing the baptism.

  2. I don't think it is much different that in Catholicism.

Maybe this would be helpful to you.  You can also directly ask your Pastor.

  3. When I had my youngest son baptized in the Luth. Church, we had three God parents. A couple and my single brother in law. I would suggest you speak to the pastor who will do the ceremony. He may have a recommendation for you so all that wish to be included can be included.
