Ruler on Ice confirmed for Breeders’ Cup Classic, and will be shipped to Churchill Downs at the end of the month
Ruler on Ice have not shown his Belmont Stakes form ever since he won the third leg of the Triple Crown, finishing on the money twice against heavy competition after his famous Belmont Stakes win.
However, trainer Kelly Breen has announced that the son of Roman Ruler, out of Champagne Glow by Saratoga Six, Ruler on Ice has been confirmed for a run in the Grade 1, $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic on 12 October.
The 3-year-old gelding will stay at his home base, Monmouth Park, and will train there for the Churchill Downs main event and will be shipped for the Breeders’ Cup at the end of the month.
Ruler on Ice turned in five furlongs ahead of the Classic and completed the distance 1 minute and 02 seconds flat, Kelly Breen will rest Rule on Ice over the weekend because he is scheduled to work on 22nd and then 29th of October before he gets shipped off to Churchill Downs.
Ruler on Ice broke his maiden at Del Mar in his second attempt at about 6 furlongs, and since then he has either been second best or third best, victory has eluded his far too many times after close encounters.
Before going into the Belmont Stakes, Ruler on Ice turned in a second place finish in the Federico Tesio at about 1 1/16 miles at Pimlico on 7 May, 2011.
Concealed Identity got the better of him, won the Belmont Stakes, and then headed came back home to run in the Grade 1, $1 million Haskell Invitational, where he finished third behind the Preakness Stakes winner Shackleford and the Bob Baffert trained Coil.
Saratoga was next up in line for Ruler on Ice, as he ran in the Grade 1 Travers Stakes and finished 4th, while Todd Pletcher trainer Stay Thirsty came out the victor.
The Grade 2 Pennsylvania Derby was the one Kelly Breen must have been hoping to win, but Ruler on Ice let himself and his connections down by losing out to Honor and Serve over a distance of 1 1/8 miles on 24 September, 2011.
Winning those close races would’ve done Rule on Ice’s confidence the world of good, but as it stand he is still a force to be reckoned with and have the ability to perform well in big races.
