Ruler on Ice rated best among the recent Belmont Stakes winner’s going in the Breeders’ Cup Classic
After his upset win in the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes, 3-year-old gelding Ruler on Ice has finished on the money twice in his three starts after the third leg of Triple Crown, but nothing of significance that would separate him from the rest.
The 1 ½ mile long Belmont Stakes itself is known as the Test of Champions, but in recent year’s time but the winners who came out of the race have never won a single race again.
However, the year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic on 5 November at Churchill Downs has reeled in the last two Belmont Stakes winners, Drosselmeyer and Ruler on Ice.
The 4-year-old colt Drosselmeyer, has gone on to win over the distance of 1 ¼ miles once in his career, and the win came this year in the One Count Stakes at Belmont Park on 15 May, 2011, when he defeated Birdrun and Inherit the Gold with the winning time
of 2 minutes and 6.07 seconds.
Drosselmeyer can get the Breeders’ Cup distance of 1 ¼ miles, and he proved it again that he should be considered as a threat when he finished second behind Flat Out in the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup over the same distance on 1 October.
On the other hand, Ruler on Ice should at least rate as a long shot, but it is the 2011 Belmont Stakes winner Ruler on Ice may very well have the most upside over Drosselmeyer.
The 3-year-old Roman Ruler gelding, Ruler on Ice is coming off a sharp second place finish in the Grade 2 Pennsylvania Derby at Parx Racing behind to Honor and Serve.
It was the first time that Ruler on Ice came off the pace, and the results were more than useful for future endeavours. The new style help the gelding explore more options as he goes for the winner.
Garrett Gomez will be aboard Ruler on Ice in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, and the jockey won the last edition of the race also at Churchill Downs under Blame, who was responsible of defeating Zenyatta in her lone defeat.
Ruler on Ice might not have won after his Belmont Stakes upset, but he surely has run three decent races after that.
